MERCATO NUOVO or LOGGE DEL PORCELLINO
Built by the Grand Duke Cosimo in order to replace the original market that was closed down in 1548, the Loggia became the place to find silk and other precious objects.
In the middle of the loggia, a peculiar plaque records in Latin: ‘Ostendendo putenda, et percutiendo lapidem culo nudo’.
Any merchant who failed to properly perform their duty to the prosperous and business oriented city of Florence was spanked 3 times on their (nude) bottom!
A very strange punishment indeed, but considering the shame they brought upon the city, it seems a good way to keep those wily merchants in line.
