A contrada was the place where business and trade took place, and the word was used to identify small groups of villages surrounding Siena.
On some street corners in town, there are little bricks like the one below (in the Bruco Contrada), which identify the limits of each Contrada.
Today Siena is divided in 17 Contradas considered small, independent villages within the city.
