In the 18th century the ruzzola was played during Lent until the growth of new vegetation in the hedgerows made it difficult to find the disc. It is said that once Leopold ll of Lorena stopped in Petricci, a small town in the Grosseto area, to watch and join in the game.
The players even had suitable clothes which are accurately copied in the re- enactment; fustian trousers, coarse materials, hand-made velvets and shawls in wool yarn, felt hats, bodices, kerchiefs tied behind the neck and, for the women, the traditional apron was a must.
