The coat of arms for Florence was an Argent a fleur-de-lys flory gules.
In Florence, some suggest that the fleur-de-lys has its origins in the white iris that grows in the Arno valley.
The first Florentine flag was a white flower on a purple background, but after the defeat of the Ghibellini, the Guelfi switched the colours of the flag and made the background white and the iris flower purple. The same design was used for the fiorino (florin),
the gold coin minted in 1252.
