If you are in Massa Marittima the Mining Museum, located a few minutes walk from the Piazza del Duomo,  worth a visit.

The Museum covers about 700m of the old tunnels that run through the travertine of the hill on which the city is built.

These tunnels are in part natural while others were dug in the Middle Ages to quarry the stone needed for building.

The museum was set up by ex miners who recreated their working environment.
