Thanks to the great quarries exploited since the Ist century B.C. Tuscany witnessed the formation of a veritable marble civilisation.

This means not only the complex technology of the extraction and transportation of the enormous blocks, but also the society that for centuries has lived off of this precious resource.

Michelangelo Buonarroti favoured the marble of the Apuane Alps, thus adding value to the marble fields of the spectacular Mount Altissimo.

Today, the mining area of the Apuane Alps is one of the most important centres in the world for working this material.

Many marble quarries are situated between the provinces of Lucca and Massa-Carrara, making the landscape facing the Versilia coast quite fascinating.
