Woodwork and Arte dei Legnaioli

Woodworking in Florence has been significant since the beginning of the 14th century, dating back to the formation of the artist guild of the Legnaioli.

The members of the Arte dei Legnaioli worked on buildings and made furniture and ornamentation for interiors.

An example of the height of craftsmanship reached in this guild the 14th century are ornamented wooden chests, now found in museums.

The patron saint of the Guild was the Virgin Mary and the guild's crest shows a green tree and chest on a white background
