This traditional livestock fair is based on a centuries old tradition of transhumance, when shepherds brought their flocks and cattle back down from the Appenine mountains to the Maremma valley for the winter and stopped to

barter with merchants along the way.

Beasts of burden have given way to tractors and other farm machinery, but there is still a lively market for cattle and horses.
