This carnival dates back to 1539.
The four cantieri of the city set out lights and bonfires, prepare practical jokes, and parade down the street with their allegorical floats and masked characters in competition to see who does the best job.
On the last day, the town’s ancient traditions are acted out when a straw figure, called the Giocondo, is burnt in the Piazza.
